I have found that more than anything, Chinese cuisine and guidance from my Chinese grandmother have influenced the way I cook. While my Chinese heritage may seem relatively small, it is a large part of my identity-especially in terms of my cooking. ![]() Though this could have easily meant I was just a hungry kid, luckily it extended further by the age of four I was cutting mushrooms with a chef's knife the size of my torso, and today I continue to explore this passion, pushing my abilities whenever I can find time. At mine, I ignored the items completely, reaching to grab the spread of food that lay next to them. It is believed that the one they pick symbolizes their future. In many asian cultures, there is a one year celebration where an array of items are layed out for the child to choose from. My name is James Ahn, I am half Korean, a quarter Chinese, and a quarter Irish. The money we raise will go towards aiding these youth on their way to the workforce, encouraging a continuation of culinary passion, and giving them a means to further explore food. This academy is dedicated to providing underserved youth with an opportunity to gain classroom training, work experience, and transferable skills that help them become employable in the culinary and hospitality industry. Within the vocational training program is the Drummond Culinary Academy, which truly spoke to my own love for cooking. They provide a series of programs and opportunities to wrap around the whole youth: diploma education to age 24 true vocational training with industry professionals mental health counseling probation case management and support job readiness life skills physical activity enrichment activities and connections to health, social and family services. Rancho Cielo is-in their own words-a comprehensive learning and social services center for underserved and disconnected youth in Monterey County. I am looking to raise $5,000 dollars to help young chefs explore their passion for cooking. They have Friday night dinners from October to June where you can meet the students of the DCA and eat their incredible food. I urge everyone to check out Rancho Cielo's website. I got mine a few years ago and it invigorated my culinary passion and encouraged me to get into the kitchen even more than I already did. For anyone getting into cooking, receiving your first knife is a huge milestone. They will be given to graduating students as a reward for their hard work, as a memento that connects them with RC, and as a tool with which they can rely on. With the proceeds, I will be donating personalized chef knives to Rancho Cielo's Drummond Culinary Academy. ![]()
